Memoirs from Site Work "...It was a Physical Training organisation funded by the state. Mayor Lutfi Kirdar was considering the construction of a sports building in İstanbul. However, there was no allocation for Physical Training. Moreover, municipal regulations did not allow for the construction of a sports building. The mayor envisaged a building to serve both as a place to do sport and to hold exhibitions, and to this end had a project organised by Italian architect Vietti Violi. One day, I received a phone call from him. He asked whether I had seen the project and what the costs would be. I had a look and said it could be in the region of 7-8 million lira. He thanked me. I got quite enthusiastic about the idea and asked for an appointment to see the mayor. He agreed to see me and I asked what he wanted to do. "I want to build a sports building and a building for holding exhibitions, but the project costs have turned out to be too high, so we are unable to go ahead", he said. "How much money is available?" I asked. "I have 1.5 million", he replied. In response I said, "If you let me have 2.5 million, I'll do it for you". "OK, but if you go over budget, I can't give you a penny more", he said. Sinasi Sahingiray and I made the project and we put it out to tender as a 2.5 million job. Costs for the building came to 2.5 million, 650 thousand lira. The mayor said he couldn't go to the committee to ask for 65 thousand lira. "Make the final account 2.5 million, say hi to the contractor and ask him to sue me. I'll pay him this amount in the settlement", he said. So that's how the building was made for 2.5 million. (1948-1949)"
