    Memoirs from Site Work
"...Atakoy 2. In the staging of the neighbourhood construction project we made a point of conserving the mature trees. But one of the trees was right under the covered walkway leading diagonally across from the shopping centre to the shops opposite. They say it's got to be cut down. A great big terebinth tree. In response to our question, they estimate that it's thirty to thirty-five years old. I can't bear it. Of course there is a solution for saving it. A solution? I'll move the tree together with its roots and soil. First the upper section is trimmed at the sides and the top, and then a channel is dug to a depth of 2 metres around the tree leaving 2.5 metres of earth around the roots section to separate the tree and its roots from the ground. Then, there is a certain amount of digging out on all four sides under the tree and the roots are wrapped in three or four bands of steel rope to prevent loss of the soil around the roots. Then it's time to tow the tree. We start to pull the tree by the root ropes along a channel that has been dug out to the side by a D.9 bulldozer. But as we tug and tug it leans at an angle of 30 degrees with a section of roots sticking up in the air, and it won't budge from its place. As we wear ourselves out we start wondering if the tree has a thick, deep sap root keeping it in place. Anyway, this root gets the chop and we move the tree 15 metres to the side. Now in the year 2006 this tree is about 75-80 years old and enhances the area with its beauty and cool shade. Once in a while I walk past it. It's still living, and will live on after I'm gone. It makes me so happy when I look at it and congratulate myself that I let it live. I wonder if the tree is aware of this?"
